5.4 Agronomic Manipulations of Cash Crops

Numerous strategies exist to manipulate planting of cash crops in order to increase their utilization of resources and therefore decrease the resources available to support weed growth. However, the optimum planting strategy depends on the morphological and physiological traits of the crop (see next section), including leaf and rooting architecture and growth rate (Gibson et al., 2003; Worthington et al., 2015). There are several ways in which crop populations can be manipulated, in terms of how they are planted, so as to take advantage of the resource acquisition traits of crops that influence weed suppression. In general, these include reducing the distance between crop rows, increasing the density of crops via seeding rate, and changing the orientation of crop rows with respect to the path of the sun.
